LIBRARY INSTRUCTIONAL RESOURCES - 505 CoSer

Thisserviceprovides access to current instructional tools including print,mediaand remote resources, to meet the rapidly changing informationneeds oflibrary patrons.  Through regional planning and coordinatedpurchasing,the School Library System (SLS) explores partnerships withother librarysystems, publishers and information vendors to seek themost costeffective contracts and services.  All resources areaccessible toparticipants online.  SLS staff assists districts withtraining andtechnical assistance with electronic resources as needed. Districts mayparticipate in one or all of the extended service levels:

Level 1 - Online Databases

TheOnlineDatabase Service offers district libraries the opportunity topurchasedatabases at a volume discount.  These online fee-basedsubscriptions,which can be accessed via the Internet from school orhome, support theK-12 curriculum.  Resources assist in linking thelibrary media programto curriculum, modeling behavior students need tobe successful in theinformation age.  This shared service includesWeb-based encyclopedias,magazines, newspapers, curriculum referencetools, and other electroniclibrary databases.

Level 2 - Periodical Subscriptions

ThePeriodicalSubscription service provides for regional coordination forthe purchaseof school library magazine subscriptions.  School Librarysystemnegotiates discounted pricing with subscription providers basedon volumediscount.

Level 3 - Cooperative Collection Development (CCD)

TheCooperativeCollection Development (CCD) service encouragescollaboration andadvanced planning to guarantee that library monies arespent effectively,needless duplication of resources is avoided, andcollections arethoughtfully developed to support curriculum. Participating librariesidentify their own collection needs annually anda CCD Committeecooperatively develops selection criteria to ensurethat purchases arealigned with curriculum and meet the needs of allparticipants.  Booksbecome the property of the SLS CCD collection, butare housed in thelibrary that recommended the purchase.
