What is Distance Learning?

Distance Learning:"the process of extending learning, or delivering instructional resource-sharing opportunities, to locations away from a classroom, building or site, to another classroom, building or site by using video, audio, computer, multimedia communications, or some combination of these with other traditional delivery methods."

ONC BOCES offers a Distance Learning Program on behalf of the component school districts through the development of distance learning classrooms, delivery and reception of programs via an IP network.  Coordination, equipment, training, and instructional costs are provided through this shared service.

The distance learning network allows for simultaneous sharing of courses and programs with full audio and video capabilities. Participating sites share courses allowing students a wider variety of courses to choose from along with access to college level courses.  The technology enables the districts to experience a global connections in such a rural area.

If you are interested in scheduling a videoconference, follow these easy steps:

  • Step 1 - Find a field trip or project. Search content providers through the links provided below. If you're not sure where to start, fill out your contact information and submit the Videoconference Request Form posted in Step 2 and the Distance Learning Coordinator will assist you in finding what you're looking for.
  • Step 2 - Complete the Videoconference Request Form.
  • Step 3 - The Distance Learning Coordinator will contact you to gather more information.  The Distance Learning Coordinator will then contact the content provider to schedule the virtual field trip and test connection.
  • Step 4 - The teacher, in some cases, will receive preconference materials which should be reviewed or completed with the students before the virtual field trip date.
  • Step 5 - If possible, schedule a time for the students to visit the distance learning classroom beforehand.  Practice speaking clearly and review videoconference etiquette (located at the bottom of this page).
  • Step 6 - The videoconference.  Let the presenter lead the discussion.   Make sure the camera is set to show all of the participants.  All participants should position themselves in a close proximity to the microphone.  REMEMBER TO HAVE FUN!
