Students win state competitionONC BOCES students from both occupational centers excelled at the SkillsUSA State Championships in Syracuse.

Four students captured first place finishes which allow eligibility for them to compete in the SkillsUSA National Championships in June at Louisville, Ky.

Other second and third place finishes at the event last week were recorded by ONC BOCES students, who all qualified for the SkillsUSA State Championship through banner performances at the SkillsUSA Area II Regional Conference at SUNY Morrisville on Friday, Feb. 2, which featured 900 competitors.

Samantha Mace, from Charlotte Valley CSD, is a student in the Northern Catskills Occupational Center’s cosmetology program. Mace won first place in the Seniors Cosmetology category.

Athena Basdekis and Andrew Morell, from Oneonta, are enrolled in the ONC BOCES Engineering program. The duo took a first place finish in the Mobile Robotics category.
Sylvia Hernandez also took first place at the State Championship, in the category of Juniors Cosmetology.

ONC BOCES Engineering students, Nathan Climenhaga, Taylor Murch and Margaret Schuermann, also captured second place awards. Other results from the State Championship are expected to be released by May 4.

The annual SkillsUSA State Championships featured high school students from technical schools and BOCES programs throughout the state competing in a variety of events. The competition features more than 60 contests clustered within numerous job fields that include computer and communications, construction, culinary, health, leadership, mechanics, and security and law.
