The ONC BOCES Mechatronics Program competed in the New York State Industries for the Disabled (NYSID) CREATE Competition on April 8th. The students competed against engineering college students from across the NYS. They developed a prototype crimping machine for Creekside Industries/ ARC Otsego in Oneonta, and the team took third place in this competition!
We want to thank Creekside Industries for their help and for giving us this opportunity, Home Depot in Oneonta for donating the worktable, ONC BOCES New Vision Engineering for 3D printing parts, ONC BOCES Visual Arts for producing our video, and Ralph W. Earl for loaning us parts to build our specialized vacuum tool. We could not have done this project without all of their support!

New Visions Healthcare is an immersive program for highly motivated high school seniors. The students spend their senior year at Bassett Hospital gaining over 150 hrs of rotation experience, interacting with healthcare professionals, and earning college credits in A&P, Physics, and Composition 1000 through SUNY Oneonta. Additionally, guest speakers based on units of study, visits from former New Visions students in college and beyond, hands-on experiences for CPR in the clinical education simulation lab as well as dissections with providers, and Up-Close Cardiology participation to give back and teach middle school students, round out this integrated and engaging opportunity. New Visions Healthcare is for academically sound students who want to experience the diversity of healthcare professions and want to challenge themselves in their senior year. There are 9 students in the Fox New Visions program from 8 different schools. Students take 10 credits of college classes (physics, anatomy & physiology, and composition) and economics/participation in government and healthcare. They spend 3 mornings a week on rotation in the different hospital/clinic departments, shadowing and gaining experience/contacts in various medical fields.
The Bassett 2023-2024 class includes 10 students from 6 schools with healthcare interests ranging from pharmacy to healthcare administration to advanced care practitioner nursing and physical therapy. All students gained acceptance into multiple four-year institutions, including direct entrance programs, and are currently narrowing down their choices.
The New Visions Engineering Class of 2024 had an exciting week of learning! They started with a visit to the New Berlin Chobani Factory on March 20th, where they explored the inner workings of yogurt production and the role of engineers in the factory. The day included a warm welcome from Morgan VanAlstine, insights from Nathan Gundlach, Vice President of Operations, and an informative presentation by Isaac Adams. The students also enjoyed a tour of the facility, donning protective gear provided by Chobani, and ended the trip with a delicious lunch and yogurt sampling.
Continuing their journey, on March 27, the class visited Raymond Corporation in Greene, New York. They learned about Raymond's history and products, took a tour led by Lee Moxley, and participated in a panel with Brian Warner, Mike Bishop, Tianran Cui, and Josh Smith. The panel discussed the various engineering roles at Raymond and offered advice for future employment. The students also explored the 3D printing lab before heading home, grateful for the valuable insights into manufacturing and career preparation.
Senior Mechatronics students had a visit from Advisory Member, Luke Anderson, from Bartell Machinery. They discussed their prototype, mechanical systems, automation, robotic controls, and recruitment.
